A tuneful examination of how the vibrancy of New York\'s Lower East Side created a cultural outpouring that influenced both uptown and downtown American theater and popular culture. The program features MC and vocalist Henry Sapoznik accompanied by the "Buena Mitzvah Social Club," New York\'s Yiddish swing and radio veterans, under the direction of Pete Sokolow.

Henry Sapoznik is an Emmy- and Grammy-nominated record producer and performer of traditional Yiddish and American music, who with MacArthur Fellow David Isay, produced the critically acclaimed series "Yiddish Radio Project" for National Public Radio. He spearheaded the renewal of interest in klezmer music with his pioneering group Kapelye.

A renowned veteran of New York\'s music scene for over four decades, Pete Sokolow is an acknowledged master of both jazz and Jewish music. A gifted pianist as well as reed player, his numerous recordings include "Klezmer Plus! with Sid Beckerman and Howie Leess".

This concert has been funded by a generous endowment from the William Petschek family.
