This work is the oldest glass Burial Society beaker in existence. Burial Societies perform an important role in orthodox communities, including caring for the sick and preparing the dead for burial. The Jewish Burial Societies of Europe adopted some of the Christian guilds\' rituals, including the commission of emblems of the organization, such as this enameled glass piece. Its decoration features a frieze of Burial Society members who are marching with a bier towards the cemetery.
