Numismatics is the study of coins and medals. Thousands of years ago, people bartered goods, services, or weights of metal for purchases. The first coins appeared ca. 600 BCE and were made by hammering silver or bronze into a mold. The design carved within the mold identified the place, date and value of the coins.
During the Renaissance, a new art form appeared, the medal, that imitated the large commemorative coins of Roman emperors. Medals are cast in honor of individuals and events.';
