The Return of the Jewish Volunteer, 1834
Oil on canvas

1984-61 ' ; $object_summary = 'Oppenheim\'s depiction of a wounded Jewish soldier\'s return home on the Sabbath day comments on the impact of emancipation on traditional Jewish practice. The soldier\'s father turns from a Hebrew text to inspect the Iron Cross displayed on his son\'s chest with a mixture of pride — it was awarded for bravery — and suspicion — it is a highly visible Christian symbol. Oppenheim is widely considered to be the first professional Jewish artist.
