$object_summary = 'Rubin\'s paintings of the 1920\'s have been stylistically linked to the French naifs such as Henri Rousseau. Also evident is his debt to Modigliani, whose monumental figures seem to press the boundaries of the canvas. Yet Rubin\'s primitivism must also be viewed in light of other Israeli paintings of the decade; their pervasive aesthetic combined the tenets of modernism with an innocent depiction of the land, creating a style appropriate for the infancy of Israel\'s national rebirth.
