The Talmudists, 1934
Oil on canvas

JM 51-48 ' ; $object_summary = ' Max Weber, one of the vanguard American modernists, was one of the few artists to adapt the vocabulary of modern painting to representations of Jewish themes. The Talmudists has a nervous line and Mannerist composition that shows Weber\'s admiration of El Greco. He appropriates the gestures of El Greco\'s ecstatic Christian figures and saints for the excited gesticulation of the mystical Hasidic sect.
