JM 93-52 ' ; $object_summary = 'Physician and poet Ephraim Hezekiah Bueno (1599-1665), also known as Bonus, descended from a prominent family of Marranos living in Amsterdam. The Marranos, Jews from Spain and Portugal, had been forced by the Inquisition to convert to Catholicism. In Amsterdam, during the Dutch "Golden Age" of the 17th and 18th centuries, they enjoyed the freedom to return to their ancestral faith. Bueno co-published the first Hebrew book in Amsterdam in 1627 on the press of Manasseh ben Israel. '; ?>
