Study for the Jewish School (Joe Singer as a Boy), 1980
Pastel and charcoal on paper

1986-209 ' ; $object_summary = 'Study for the Jewish School began as a sketch for Kitaj\'s The Jewish School of 1980. A nineteenth-century anti-Semitic caricature entitled Die Judenschule served as Kitaj\'s source. In Kitaj\'s painting and this pastel, the boy reading a book represents the enduring tradition of Jewish learning that the artist believes will survive even if the boy does not. Known as a pop artist, Kitaj often makes reference to other artworks in his own politically and emotionally-charged paintings and drawings.'; ?>
