Made possible by the Kekst Family, educator workshops at The Jewish Museum provide teachers with the opportunity
to examine the permanent and temporary exhibitions, explore ways of incorporating
the Museum\'s resources into their classrooms, and share ideas with other
educators. Workshops -- which promote and stimulate inquiry and discussion while
addressing the New York State Learning Standards -- include tours of the related
exhibitions, presentations, educational materials and time to collaborate with
colleagues. Please contact the Scheduling Coordinator at 212.423.3225 or schedulingcoordinator@thejm.org for more information.
UPCOMING WORKSHOPS
Coming to America - Teaching Immigration
Thursday, January 29, 2004
4 - 7 pm
Recommended for Elementary and Middle School Educators
What inspires people to immigrate to a new land? What might they carry in their hearts and minds and in their suitcases to adapt to and adopt their new home?
This workshop offers educators the opportunity to examine how Museum educators guide students in their exploration of the Jewish immigrant experience, as well as their understanding of the challenges faced by immigrants who settled in America. A Museum educator will discuss the importance of people\'s customs and material culture. Participants will then go on a tour of our newly reinstalled galleries where they will examine artifacts and historical photographs that were brought to America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
A light dinner will be served.
Building Bridges - Teaching Tolerance
Thursday, March 18, 2004
4 - 7 pm
Recommended for Middle and High School Educators
This workshop will explore themes addressed in our three tolerance programs - Understanding the Holocaust through Art and Artifacts, Bridges and Boundaries: African Americans and American Jews and Cultural Exchange: Jewish and Muslim Connections. Participants will learn to use the Museum\'s permanent exhibition as a resource for teaching tolerance. After a scholarly lecture, participants will go on a tour of our newly reinstalled galleries where they will examine related art and artifacts and observe ways in which this topic is addressed.
A light dinner will be served.
Educator Workshops are made possible by a generous grant from the Kekst Family.
