This painting exemplifies the eroticism that characterizes many western depictions of Oriental women. Belonging to an exotic Other, women of North Africa were objectified by western artists and presented as embodiments of sexual allure. In this work, the expression and posture of the subject conflicts with her Grand Costume, a dress associated with religious ceremony.
