Alluringly Alien: Schoenberg Exposed: A Conversation with Esa-Pekka Salonen and Alex Ross

This conversation will engage both Esa-Pekka Salonen\'s and Alex Ross\' far-ranging interests, from Schoenberg\'s romanticism to other 20th century classics, and the shared passion they entertain for the rock band Radiohead.

Alex Ross, music critic of The New Yorker since 1996, has also served as a critic for The New York Times. His book, The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century, a cultural history of 20th-century music, is due out in 2004.

Esa-Pekka Salonen is a composer/conductor and Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has led critically acclaimed festivals of music by Ligeti, Schoenberg, Shostakovich and Stravinsky. The recipient of a Grammy Award, he has twice been named Conductor of the Year by the Royal Philharmonic Society in London.

This program was presented at the LACMA Institute for Art and Cultures.

The Saul and Gladys Gwirtzman Program is given annually in memory of the parents of Rita J. Kaplan.
